A Brief Perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals

WRITTEN BY: Asanya Boluwatife Ndidi The unanimous agreement of the 193 member states of the United Nations General Assembly to the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in 2015 produced one of the most ambitious and inclusive global aspirations in history. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Targeted at committing members states to ensure greater inclusivity, end poverty and push the world to a more sustainable path. The SDGs are broad and interdependent thus begetting the question as to how well these broad global aspirations are likely to result in implementable developments especially in developing countries. THE ADVANTAGES OF FORMAL EDUCATION IN AFRICA

The Advantages of Formal Educational System in Africa and Beyond.
The concept of Education is widely appreciated in modern times as Africa and the world at large have come to appreciate the major role it plays in the development of societies. As the 4th Sustainable Development Goal is to ensure inclusive and quality Education across the globe, it has become pertinent that all aspects of this concept are understood and leveraged to achieve this goal. The varied types of Education are known to be the formal, informal and non-formal (Passion In Education, 2019). However, what remains the common type and most referred to when the concept of Education is brought up is the Formal type of education. A little history lays bare the facts that indeed Formal education is not of African origin but after the colonization of the continent, it has come to stay. What then makes Formal education the most seemingly important and talked about type of education as opposed to the remaining two that also have their relevance in personal and societal development?

As the only type of education with a hierarchical and well-structured framework,  it provides the opportunity for individuals to measure progress as humans inherently prefer to be aware of growth be it in a mental capacity sense or in a holistic sense. Formal Education

especially in the basic level is also developed in accordance with numerous ideals that can be built upon by the individual to remain relevant to the world even though it keeps changing and improving. With subjects like Mathematics and Science being the foundation to various concepts in the world today, it is clear how formal education is seen to be the most important of the three. Many writers have referred to formal education as a global language that allows nations to interact with the purpose of trading goods, ideas and information. Another upside to formal education is its ability to impart certain necessary life skills such as discipline, teamwork and the importance of relationships/social interactions in its students. As tough as formal education can be, discipline remains an absolute necessity in order to succeed and hence this and many other life skills become part of students as they grow up in turn helping them to become responsible citizens in the future. Through its certification system, formal education also provides tangible proofs of one's ability and capabilities and individuals can use these tangible proofs to earn a living and improve their living standards.

To conclude, although non-formal and informal types of Education are important and necessary in their own way, the formal education system is an all-round system that provides students with the objective, skills and proof they need to succeed in the world today.
